I will anticipate, as you read this page, that you: a) are considering stepping into the gaming cafe business, and b) that you've darkened the doorstep of at least one gaming cafe establishment. Possibly you've had been to several? In that case, then take a moment to think back to your best gaming cafe experience. What are the stuffs that immediately stand out in your mind that made your experience good? Was the sound coming from the speakers top notch? What made it a lasting impression?

Now differentiate that with your worst experience in a gaming cafe. Were the games' visuals choppy?

There are a few, but important, distinctions between an internet cafe and a gaming cafe; many inexperienced gaming cafe start-ups make them. And understandably, simply speaking: an internet cafe can operate employing the same software and infrastructure that a gaming cafe uses, however, not vice versa.

There's a straightforward explanation for this. Gaming cafes need better hardware and system resources compared to the plain internet variety. Two items exists in the centre of a prosperous gaming cafe: comprehensive gaming cafe software and robust equipment.

For an internet cafe, the only software needed, besides the operating system, an office suite and web browser (which is added to most all operating systems nowadays), is the billing and management software. An invoicing program is paramount. The cafe management software is as essential as, or maybe even more important than the billing, though (gasp!) This is exactly what lets you bill your customers, and as well monitor their use and lock the station when their time is used up.

Gaming cafe software, in contrast, is not the same. There's also a requirement for games (who would have thought?)! First-Person Shooters (typically called FPS) and Real-Time Strategy (also referred to as RTS) are the most popular genre of gaming cafe software. Many gamers interact with their friends in the game, either in the same location or over the internet. And groups of people are exactly what you should want to be catering to.

Top-notch gaming cafe software, in addition to robust hardware, is needed: well aside from what an internet cafe would ever require. Internet cafes, generally, run just fine with only budget-priced computers and servers. No necessity for impressive visuals, phenomenal audio or huge storage capacity. The fact is, a lot of internet cafe stations just use the graphics and sound capabilities supplied by the motherboard and that suits their needs just fine!

This is simply not so with gaming cafes, though. Particularly with today's games, more is demanded from computers than in the past. Many computer manufacturers now build their machines with a separate video card, whose sole task would be to process real-world physics algorithms! Great quality audio systems and speakers aren't nearly as expensive as they used to be. On the other hand, if you wish to just throw money at something then spend $100.00 on an audio system and send me the rest (I take cash, credit and PayPal...no checks, please. :) Most players nowadays will want to see decent-sized, monitors with great resolution, fast input devices, processors and online connections, in addition to a network with fast data transfer rate.

Needless to say, the one thing you need more than anyone else is customers! If you are worried about spending your inheritance on marketing, don't worry!

One great resource for locating customers is clubs. No, I am not talking about techno music, light shows and crowded venues. What I'm talking about are social clubs. You know, groups of people with common interests that will get together from time to time: jogging, sports, recycling, community improvement. These groups are chalk full of individuals who already share things in common and would probably make great customers! If they try your place and like it, they can even turn into a word-of-mouth marketing army for you.

A few well-placed flyers, targeted internet ads, and several good old-fashioned word-of-mouth advertising will go further towards a making your start-up successful. Sustaining that success, of course, depends on the experience that you offer your clients and exactly how well you run your business.
